Day Of The Straws, a 'cyber vault' of knowledge, cultural lore, and wisdom is now live:

A new film, text, sound and image digital project examining the experience of Covid-19 through cultural lore, informed by how social history surrounding the 1832 cholera epidemic relates to the modern-day pandemic. Day of the Straws explores events that, while distant in time, seem to share similar features, including supernatural phenomena and fake news.

The work has been inspired by Marie Brett’s recent Creative Enquiry and Artist in Residency, Cultural Lore (harnessing cultural traditions and knowledge) which focused on issues of how arts and ageing relate to community access and personal impact.

Watch a specially made film screening about Day of the Straws commissioned by SIRIUS especially for Cork City’s Culture Night on Friday 18 September. The film features interviews and contributions from the creative team and interested members of the community drawn from across Cork County and beyond.

Day of the Straws is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and The Arts Council.

Day of the Straws is a residency and small-scale public platform as part of BE PART, Art BEyond PARTicipation. Towards a better understanding of the entanglements between power, politics, place and publics in arts practice. BE PART is a 4-year audience and organisational development project in the field of participatory art practices implemented by 10 EU and non-EU partners.  BE PART sets out to create a European network of co-creators, supported by artists and organisations to collectively foster new approaches and structures for the co-creation and mobility of art.
