Midsummer Parade
Cork Community Art Link
Playing by Ear: A Case Study of To Be What We Are, written by Eszter Némethi, captures the insights and experiences of To Be What We Are, a two-year collaborative project with Traveller children and their families in North Cork 2022-23, produced by Cork Midsummer Festival. The
text reviews the core principles, considerations and techniques employed in this play-based participation process.
The 148 page limited-print publication discusses play as a participatory method, considers the role of documentation and offers a methodology which can be applied in other contexts. Edited by Dr. Sophie Hope, this reflective work explores themes of agency, community engagement, and the power of play across inter-cultural, inter-sectoral, and inter-generational collaborations.
To Be What We Are resulted in an installation exhibition at St. Peters in June 2023, and a short film of the same title (dir. Claire Murphy) which premiered at the Cork International Film Festival. The learning from this project has been shared via participatory workshops in Brussels and Cork; at the Be Part network symposium at HomoNovus, Riga; at the Cork Youth Summit: Good Practice in Child and Youth Participation at Pairc Ui Chaoimh and at the National Child Protection and Welfare Social Work Conference in 2023.
Supported by the Arts Council, Cork Midsummer Festival, TUSLA, Springboard Family Project, Cork City Council Arts Office, Creative Europe and the Green Corridor.
Publication launch kindly hosted by MTU Crawford College of Art & Design on 25th November 2024.
