Renowned artist Tino Sehgal’s This youiiyou pays tribute to the bonds of care and love between generations – between child and guardian – in this fleeting constructed situation between infants and their parents.
Created in 2023 in dialogue with El Greco’s The Adoration of the Shepherds, This youiiyou transforms and expands that tribute to life itself by honouring the birth of children and those that care for them. Parents and infants participate together as voice, rhythm, body language and affections that create an inspiring live encounter between the spectator and those enacting the work.
Critically acclaimed artist Tino Sehgal is known worldwide for his artistic practice of ‘constructed situations’ between visitors and participants. A previous winner of prizes such as the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and the Hans Molfenter Prize, Sehgal has exhibited in some of the world's biggest galleries from Tate Modern in London to New York's Guggenheim, Palais de Tokyo in Paris to Hong Kong's Tai Kwun.
This youiiyou was originally commissioned by Fundación Botín and exhibited at Centro Botín in 2023. El Greco’s The Adoration of the Shepherds is part of the Fundación Botín collection. Photography by Belen de Benito courtesy of Fundación Botín.
