Culture Night @ Cork Midsummer Festival

Culture Night @ Cork Midsummer Festival

Culture Night 2020 will take place this Friday 18 September - and despite the challenges this year, organisers and venues have created over 60 events, a huge testament to the creativity and dedication of the Arts Sector in Cork.

As part of Culture Night, Cork Midsummer Festival will premiere two new short films featuring two of our #MidsummerMoments earlier this year, Day Of The Straws and Little Druids For Humanity. Read on to find out more!

Little Druids For Humanity

A group of children from Ballincollig venture into a remote game of initiation in magic in hopes of transforming the world into a better place.

An experimental short film by Teatro Container in collaboration with Cork Midsummer Festival, Linda Curtin, Francesca Castellano and Cork Film Centre. With support from Cork City Council and Creative Ireland. In the weeks leading up to and beyond Cruinniú na nÓg the children created handcrafted wizardry, cooked up ancient magic potions, performed neighbourhood enchantments, recorded and shared video stories.

Meet some of them in Ballincollig Regional Park and Cork Film Centre at Gunpowder Mills where they show you their magic Druid characters and their wishes for the future.

This film was created as the final part of Little Druids for Humanity, a long distance arts project and adventure. Cruinniú na nÓg is an initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme at the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and is presented in partnership with RTÉ and the Local Authorities.

Day Of The Straws

A new film, text, sound and image digital project examining the experience of Covid-19 through cultural lore, informed by how social history surrounding the 1832 cholera epidemic relates to the modern-day pandemic. ‘Day of the Straws’ explores events that, while distant in time, seem to share similar features, including supernatural phenomena and fake news.  The project is created by artist Marie Brett in collaboration with writer Katie Holly and made in dialogue with community historians, healers, fortune tellers and other interested people.

Join us for a specially made film screening about Day of the Straws during Culture Night. The film features interviews and contributions from the creative team and interested members of the community drawn from across Cork County and beyond.  This event takes place at SIRIUS on Friday 18 September, from 5pm to 7pm. The film is released on SIRIUS’ YouTube channel on Saturday 19 September.

Day of the Straws is available online at

Day of the Straws is commissioned by Cork Midsummer Festival, in partnership with SIRIUS.  Day of the Straws is part of BE PART, a project created with the support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and The Arts Council.
