MERRIWINKLE: SIDSEL ENDRESEN & CHRISTIAN WALLUMROD

Merriwinkle is a fascinating collaboration between Norway’s most innovative vocalist Sidsel Endresen and the acclaimed young pianist Christian Wallumrod. Merriwinkle takes us on a journey through unexpected landscapes, where accoustics and electronics merge into magical jewels of sound.

Sidsel Endresen is one of the jewels of Norway’s thriving and innovative jazz scene. She is best know for her two releases on ECM ‘So I Write’ (1990) and ‘Exile’ (1994) which won her much critical acclaim internationally. Both releases are collaborations with Django Bates, Jon Christensen and Nils Petter Molvær as well as David Darling and Bugge Wesseltoft. She has gone on to write film, dance and experimental music and released a series of acclaimed albums on Bugge Wesseltofts Jazzland label.

Pianist Christian Wallumrod came to prominence with a series of critically acclaimed releases on ECM including ‘A Year From Easter’ and his soon to be released ‘Zoo’. He has recently completed a sold out tour of Ireland with his full emsemble.

NEIL COWLEY TRIO

Neil Cowley (piano)
Richard Sadley (double bass)
Evan Jenkins (drums)

In June 2006 The Neil Cowley Trio released their debut album, ‘Displaced’, prompting the Guardian to claim the trio as “one of the big jazz stories of the year”, and The Independent to suggest “Stardom beckons…”. Cowley is a thoroughly modern player with an impeccable touch. With inspirations as diverse as Shostakovich, Ahmad Jamal, Frank Zappa, Errol Garner, Taraf de Haidouks, Cowley creates music of energy and emotional infectiousness underpin his tremendous flair for creating beautiful, sometimes forceful melodies.

A child protégé, Cowley was performing Shostakovich at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the age of 10. Disenchanted by the competitiveness and rigour of the classical world by 17 he had turned his back on classical music and entered the world of soul performing and recording with The Brand New Heavies and Zero 7 until he formed his own band, Fragile State. Cowley met the members of his current trio through soul and funk connections, but they evolved as an acoustic jazz group, making a debut album, and delivering live shows that move freely between whispering fragility and spaciousness and full-power grooving. The Neil Cowley Trio has emerged as a highly creative and adventurous UK reflection of the approaches of such innovative contemporary keyboard trios as Esbjorn Svensson’s and the Bad Plus. Yet this trio eclectic mix is all its own and could only be from London. When the energy of Neil Cowley’s piano comes booming out of the speakers it’s impossible not to think of early Clash.

“Thrilling... dynamic... one of the most distinctive debuts you're likely to hear this year” Jazzwise

TRISKEL & CORK MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL PRESENTS IOANA PETCU-COLAN & EIMEAR FORRISTAL O’GRADY

Triskel have commissioned this concert of unique work for the 2007 Midsummer Festival, in part to celebrate the rising prominence of Irish composers and musicians internationally, but also to provide live performances of works that are not normally made available to the public. We are particularly pleased to give Ronan’s Guilfoyle’s seminal work its world premiere. Ioana Petcu-Colan commissioned Ronan to write the work for her in 2006.

Ioana is an accomplished soloist and chamber musician performing music from the baroque era to the present day. She has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras in Ireland and the UK and she has featured at many international festivals. She has broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Lyric FM and RTÉ national television. She has premiered contemporary works in Canada, Spain, the UK and Ireland.

Eimear Foristal O’Grady brings a unique dimension to collaborative performance. Her own work ‘monologue’ which opens the concert, combines improvisation with a deep understanding of how voice and words interweave with music. Eimear has performed nationwide, both within theatrical and musical circles. Also a professional cellist, she has recorded and performed with such distinguished acts as U2, Jack L, Sharon Shannon and the Frames.
