Monica Huggett, one of the world’s great baroque virtuosos, leads the
Irish Baroque Orchestra in a unique performance of this well known
work by Antonio Vivaldi.
The Four Seasons
must rate as the
world’s most popular
baroque orchestral
work. This popularity
is partly due
to the programmatic
element of the
work, spring, summer,
autumn and
winter making it
both a musical
and a meteorological
tour de
force.
Snatches of the music have been used for film scores and advertising
jingles, or can often be heard sotto voce in the background as one
ascends to the fifth floor, waits to be connected or taxis towards the
runway.
Not only are baroque instruments different from their modern counterparts,
but baroque players live dangerously when playing this music,
sailing close to the edge of the instrument’s expressive and technical
capabilities, bringing an exciting, daring and virtuosic abandon to the
music-making. Expect a thrilling experience that transports the listener
back to the sound world of Vivaldi’s time.
