In the spring of 2001, drummer/vocalist John-Christian Urich, keyboardist Ethan White, and bassist JKriv got together in a basement studio, inspired by a simple yet adventurous idea - that modern dance music could be performed completely live. From this impromptu Brooklyn jam session the Tortured Soul sound was born; a blend of soulful song-writing, skillful production, and raw live energy.
Tortured Soul’s sound and style are a unique blend of seeming contradictions. While playing a style of music typified by DJ’s and modern music technology, they perform completely live: drums, vintage keys, electric bass and soulful vocals. They’ve amazed crowds in dance venues around the world and rocked live clubs and festival audiences around the world. They craft a forward-thinking sound, while their signature white shirts and black ties throw a nod to the jazz and soul masters of the past.
As they bring their sound to thousands of new fans in clubs and festivals on nearly every continent, the mainstream tastemakers have begun to realize what the underground has known since the start: in the words of Gilles Peterson, Tortured Soul is “the future of house music.”
