Emmanuel Jal
Emmanuel Jal has been nominated for an American Gospel Music Award, was recently nominated for a Radio 3 world music award and has performed alongside Damon Albarn, Beth Orton and Turin Brakes.
By the time he was 8 years old he had learnt military strategy and weaponry and at the age of 9 he was taking part in major battles in Sudan. He eventually found strength in Christianity and a voice inside his head that compelled him to sing. His hit ‘Gua’ went to number one in Kenya and was re-recorded for Emmanuel's international debut album ‘Ceasefire’ (2005).
His heartfelt raps slip and slide between English, Arabic, Swahili, Dinka and his first language, Nuer. He’s also a rather soulful singer, as tracks like ‘Elengwen’ demonstrate. On stage, Emmanuel bobs and weaves with sure presence and was at ease conducting a crowd of 5,000 at the Live 8: Africa Calling gig in Cornwall. He contributed to the charity album ‘Help: A Day In The Life’, which became the fastest selling download album in history.
“the hottest thing to hit Nairobi, and quite possibly the entire African music scene” Observer.
