Welcome to the 9th Cork Midsummer Festival.

Galway Baroque Singers present:

Of Madrigals And Magic

Different centuries, different styles, different moods. The 60-strong choir of the Galway Baroque Singers present a programme of choral music demonstrating its powerful effect on the human spirit throughout the ages.

Listen to the austere beauty of plain chant, the serenity of the 16th century motet, the eloquence of Mozart and the warmth of Faure, the profound spirituality of Bruckner.

the light-heartedness of the madrigal, the homely appeal of the folk song and the fun of the musical as GBS take you on a quasi-historical trip through the years of the great choral tradition.

GBS was formed in 1983 and has always sung music for unaccompanied voices or voices with keyboard accompaniment. The choir has competed at many festivals throughout Ireland winning major awards at Sligo, Limerick and Navan as well as receiving the premier national award three times at the Cork International Choral festival. They were nominated as Choir of the Year in Navan in 1998, took part in the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales in 1999 and sang at the honorary conferring ceremony of Nelson Mandela at NUI Galway in June 2003.

"The Galway Baroque Singers are one of the few choirs in this country to have a distinctive identity in their sound ... blended and balanced choral tone" Martin Adams, Irish Times.

Cork City Council is delighted to support Galway Baroque Singers at St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival. Galway was one of the applicant cities along with Cork, Limerick and Waterford for the title of European Capital of Culture 2005. Having secured the title, Cork committed to inviting groups from each of the other applicant cities to take part in the year’s program of events. The title European Capital of Culture is a national designation and this event celebrates that fact.
