Welcome to the 9th Cork Midsummer Festival.

In this special year for Cork culture I am delighted to introduce our most spectacular festival to date. The line-up moves from dance in hotel rooms to music in the park; from our best family programme yet to a show that plays in your own sitting-room. We're very excited by it and we hope you will be too.

The Cork Midsummer Festival is always an exciting prospect, and this year it promises to be truly spectacular. The Festival is steadily growing in importance and this summer we have the opportunity, as it falls within the year of our designation of European Capital of Culture, to make it truly memorable.

From Corcadorca's The Merchant of Venice - the largest streetshow Cork will have ever witnessed - to the world premiere of Enda Walsh's Pondlife Angels, from the beauty of The Tallis Scholars in St Fin Barre's to the vibrancy of The Spiegeltent, Cork in June will be a riot of entertainment and colour.

Through The Lord Mayor's Picnic in the Park we hope to re-acquaint Corkonians and visitors alike to the joys of Fitzgerald's park. A day of Indian magicians, African drummers, boat trips on the river, food and fun workshops promise to make the day a truly spectacular family event.

I congratulate all who have worked so hard to put this programme together and the business community who have given generously of their financial support and urge you all to partake in the Festival.
